Mr. Richard Spender O'Brien, beloved husband of Mrs. Clarice O'Brien of Lethbridge, passed away at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital July 4, 1989 at the age of 79 years.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by four children, Peggy (Delbert) Gough of Lethbridge, Richard (Judy) O'Brien of Red Deer, Sharon (Dee) Leishman of Lethbridge, and Kathy (Greg) Pratt of Lethbridge. As well, he is survived by 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one sister, Dot Witbeck.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Jesse, George and John O'Brien.

Dick O'Brien was born in Raymond on October 10, 1909, where he completed his schooling before studying business in Salt Lake City. Upon his return to Raymond, Dick was active in basketball for six years during which time as a member of the Raymond Union Jacks, he shared in six provincial and one national championships. Dick and Clarice were married in 1934 and moved to Picture Butte in 1935, where he was office manager for Canadian Sugar Factories until his retirement in 1974. Many farmers and businessmen of the area sought out Dick for financial and income tax advice. Dick was very active in community service. He served for 22 years as president of the Picture Butte chapter of the Red Cross. He served for 10 years in the planning and construction of the Picture Butte Municipal Hospital and served as first chairman of the board. He also organized the Board of Trade, and served as founding president. He was charter president of the Lions Club. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in bishopric and high council positions. He and Clarice served for eight years at the Cardston Temple. He will be remembered as a loving, supportive husband and father, and a generous friend.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4105 Forestry Avenue South, Lethbridge, on Friday, July 7, 1989 at 2:00 p.m. with Elder Greg Pratt officiating. Friends may meet the family at Christensen Salmon Funeral Home, Thursday, July 6, 1989, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., or on Friday at the church from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment to follow in Archmount Cemetery.
