Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for George Alva "Al" Blackburn, 79, who died Friday after a long illness. Burial will be in Vandalia Cemetery.
A native of Yost, Utah, Blackburn had lived in Porterville 44 years. He and his wife were married in June 1926 after they met in the Dee hospital in Ogden, Utah, where he was a patient and she was a nurse. They lived in Washington and Utah before moving to Hanford in 1930. They moved to Porterville in 1941 where Blackburn was active in a number of community organizations. He owned and operated Blackburn's New City Cleaners on the corner of Olive and Hockett for many years until his retirement.
Both he and his wife are active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and five of their 10 children have served as missionaries.
He is survived by his wife, Opal, of Porterville; four sons, Robert and Thomas Blackburn, both of Porterville, Alva "Bud" Blackburn of Reedley and William Keith Blackburn of Bend, Ore.; six daughters, Elva Jean Durtschi and Marilyn Joyce Higham, both of Logan, Utah, Anita Gay Robins of Eden, Utah, Betty Lucille Kanady of Bakersfield, Veva Mae Reeves of San Diego, and Linda Carol Mauldin of Yokosuka, Japan; a brother, Oriel H. Blackburn of Ogden, Utah, three sisters, Elda Jensen of Springville, Utah, Merle Swanger of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Amy Humphrey of Reno, Nev.; 56 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren.
