Henry was born in Kansas in 1883. He was the son of Johann and Marie Schless who came to America from Bohemia with his older siblings (Johann, Josef, Franz and Marie), arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on May 13, 1879 on a ship named "Hansa". Once in America the family name changed to Sless.
He married Mary (1878-1915) and had they had three children; Mary, Carolyn and Arthur
After Mary's death he married Carrie Marie Power, the widow of Frank P. Brookover. Henry and Carrie had two children; George and Virginia.
He was a farmer, like his father, also worked as a carpenter, and as a real estate agent.
