1862-- military service documented by US Army papers that showed that he had enlisted (age 44) at Camp Hoskins, KY, on 15 Oct 1861 for a three-year period; rank: private; group: Capt. Payne's company G, 12th regiment of the Kentucky infantry; Although one muster-out roll listed 1863 as year of death, another muster roll showed he was "killed by the enemy on or about 12th Aug 1862;" Other military docs showed that he was "sick" and absent from duty in April 1862 at Columbia, TN; Following pursuit by the widow Elizabeth Rector Beck, the U.S. Army ultimately ruled that Joseph was "killed in the line of duty," which qualified the widow for a pension.

Post Script: Ferguson -- a known as a killer of supporters of the Union -- was later hanged for murder of several citizens
