Johan "Theobald" Schiff was born March 14, 1841 in Meissenheim, Baden, Germany to Andreas Schiff and Maria Ursula Huser. He immigrated to the U.S. in May 1852 with his brother as part of the "Community of True Inspiration" (later known as the Amana Society) in Ebenezer, New York. He came to Amana, Iowa in September 1855 but in January, 1858 he left Amana with Wilhelm Muller.
He mustered into the Indiana Volunteer Infantry Company G 69th Regiment on August 19, 1862 at Liberty, Indiana. He was wounded during the seige of Vicksburg and was furloughed where he died at home in Mt. Airy, Colerain Township, Hamilton Co. He was buried October 14, 1863 in United Protestant St. Paul's cemetery in White Oak, Colerain Township.
