Funeral for retired Sgt. Maj. Harry L. "Jack" Harris, 81, Lawton, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Coe, deacon, Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating.
Sgt. Maj. Harris died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, in Lawton.
Burial with military honors will be at Highland Cemetery. He was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Eastland, Tenn., to Pleas and Louise Alice DeRosset Harris. He married Margaret J. Kunert on Jan. 29, 1948, in Vienna, Austria. She died Aug.15, 2005, in Lawton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and retired on Dec. 1, 1966, after more than 22 years. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal (Clasp with 2 Silver Loops, 7th Award), American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster 8 and Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service at Lawton and later with the Civil Service at Fort Sill. He served with the Adjutant General's Section and later with the Legal Technician Headquarters, United States Field Artillery School Brigade. He retired in April 1987 and was awarded the Saint Barbara's Medal. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of Saint John of God Catholic Church, Fort Sill.
Survivors include two daughters: Evelyn L. Mitchell, Lawton; and Margaret A. Weryavah, Cache; two sons: Harry J. Harris, San Diego; and Larry E. Harris, Lake Jackson, Texas; a brother, Arthur Harris, Murray, Ky.; a sister, Edith Judd, Old Hickory, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
