Brede Svenson, 81, Marshall Co Pioneer, Dies
Marshall County Pioneer, who had lived at Newfolden 56 years, succumbs after long illness.
Brede Svendson, pioneer resident of Marshall county, passed away at his home in Newfolden Wednesday, December 6th, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 11 days, after a long illness from diabetes and complications that had kept him confined to his bed the past five years. Mr. Svendsen never complained of his affliction and expressed his will to accept whatever the Lord chose for him. He frequently spoke of the devotion of his children and the good care they gave him.
Brede Svendsen was born May 25, 1858 at Vardal, Norway, the son of Helen Ostby and Sven Dyldalbakken, where he lived the early years of his life. In 1880 he emigrated to the United States, coming first to Montevideo, Minn. In 1883 he came to Marshall county and homesteaded on a farm east of Newfolden, where he lived until his death.
Mr. Svendsen was scrupulously honest and upright and the type of man a community looks to for counsel and leadership, and he had been entrusted with numerous positions of trust. He served as treasurer of the school board for many years, and also of the Marshall County Scandinavian Mutual Fire Insurance Company for over 30 years. He was a charter member of the Folden church and served as its treasurer for many years. He was one of the organizers of the Farmers Cooperative Creamery at Newfolden.
Mr. Svendsen was married at Newfolden in 1880 to Natalie Hanstad who preceded him in death 10 years ago. He is survived by five sons and five daughters, Sigvart of Argyle, Helga (Mrs. Hans Hanson) Thea (Mrs. Chas. Johnson), Emma (Mrs. Even Hanson), all of Newfolden; Hans, Norris, Bernard, Oscar, and Mrs. Marie Palon, at home, Agnes (Mrs. L. Settholm) of Minneapolis. There are 17 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the home and at 2:00 p.m. at Folden church with Rev. G. P. Ronholm officiating. Songs were sung by Amos Dyrud, Rev. and Mrs. Ronholm and Mr. Gudim. Interment was in the Folden cemetery east of Newfolden.
There were many beautiful floral offerings from relatives and friends and the American Legion Post of Newfolden besides memorial gifts from the Folden Sunday School and Ladies Aid and from the Scandinavian Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Peace to the memory of the honored pioneer.
Pall bearers were Hjalmar Hinnsen, John Dyrud, Edwin Nelson, Lenus Olson, Martin Smeby, and Martin Saugen.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. Lewis Setterholm of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Thorson of Crookston; Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Einar Thune, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hanstad, Mrs. Arnold Jevning and Helbert Thune, all of Climax; Mr. and Mrs. Sigvart Svendsen and family, Mrs. Tena Paulson, S.
