Loran Stortroen, age 93, of Crookston, MN, formerly of Climax, MN, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Riverview Memory Care Center in Crookston, MN.
Loran K. Stortroen was born on June 21, 1917 in rural Climax, MN, the son of Knute and Hilda (Berg) Stortroen. Loran attended school at District 6 and began farming with his father.
On September 11, 1942, he married Gladys Signora Kleven of Fisher, MN in rural Climax, MN. He then served 3 years in the United States Army, stationed mainly on the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and was honorably discharged on November 2, 1945.
Gladys and Loran raised four children on farms near Fisher and Climax, MN. While farming, Loran became adept at carpentry, mechanics and gardening. He served on the Vineland Township Board for 52 years and was also very active in the Farmers Union Organization. Sand Hill became their church home where Loran was especially involved in the Sand Hill Cemetery Association. They both moved to Riverview Care Center in April 2007. Gladys passed away June 15, 2007.
Loran is survived by his children, Sherman (Doreen) Stortroen of East Grand Forks, MN, Eileen (George) Gunderson of Buxton, ND, Janice (Robert) Tjon of Twin Valley, MN and Larry Stortroen of Climax, MN, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one sister, Helen Prudhomme of Plattsmouth, NE, one brother, Arvid (Marlene) Stortroen of Climax, MN along with many nieces and nephews.
Loran is preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Sidney Stortroen, and a great-grandson, Bobby Christoffers, sister-in-law, Lois Stortroen, and brother-in-law, Don Prudhomme.
