Son of Wilford K. Bancroft & Algie F Bancroft.

John served as a 2nd Lieutenant and co-pilot on a B-24E Liberator bomber (41-29072) in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided at 24 Farragut Street, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war.

He was killed in a bomber crash at Cheyenne Mountain, south west of Colorado Springs, Colorado during the war. The cause of the crash was believed to have been caused by the pilot stunting for his sister who was staying at the Broadmoor Hotel. The sister witnessed the crash.

His death was listed as a "Line Of Duty" related incident.
