Robert James Miller
Birth: Oct. 14, 1983
Harrisburg
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Jan. 25, 2008
Konar, Afghanistan

Afghanistan Campaign Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Staff Sergeant in Company A, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group Airborne, US Army. On January 25, 2008, Staff Sergeant Miller volunteered to lead a Special Forces Weapons team on a nocturnal patrol near the village of Barikowt, Nari District, Konar Province, Afghanistan. Because of his Pashto language abilities, he also led a small local contingent of Afghan National Army Soldiers. As they approached their objective his team was attacked by a large group of Taliban insurgents. In the ensuing action Staff Sergeant Miller deliberately moved forward making himself vulnerable as he engaged enemy positions to provide suppressive fire, so his teammates could take cover. Exposing his position repeatedly, he drew fire from more than 100 enemy fighters until he was mortally wounded. His efforts ultimately saved the lives of his fellow Green Berets and 15 local ANA soldiers. For most conspicuous valor and selfless service sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on October 5, 2010 , presented to his parents by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
