Raymond Clinton Black was born on 12 Nov 1925 in Dodge County, Nebraska, USA as the tenth child of Maurice Franklin Black and Addie Belle Brown. He had thirteen siblings, namely: Floyd William, Beulah Elizabeth, Gladys Lillian, George Willard, Wayne Curtis, William Robert, Doris Maxine, Maurice Franklin "Junior", Merle Alden, Ruth Carmen, Opal Irene, Alta Pauline, and Dale Franklin. Moving to Reno, Leavenworth, Kansas, in the late '20s, the Black family settled on a farm.
After enlisting in the Marines, Raymond was selected and assigned to the 1st Raider Battalion. The Marine Raiders were a short lived experiment based on an elite commando unit. Originally the brain child of Major Evans F Carlson and Colonel William Donovan, the Raiders were instrumental in the success of the Guadalcanal Campaign in the WWII Pacific Theater.
Raymond married Mildred DiGeorgio and they had five sons and one daughter.
