|Birth: ||Apr. 5, 1925|
|Death: ||Mar. 22, 2003|
Wife of Estle Aldridge, daughter of Nona & Terry Hammett. Mother to Curtis, Barbara and two infant children. Sister to Lois (Myrt), Charlie, Villa & Gene.
My grandmother, Emma, was born in South Carolina and moved to Alabama where she met Estle and they married on November 22, 1941. She and Estle lived in Fayette County until 1953, when they moved to Chicago. She worked for Anderson Diecasting until retirement in 1983, when she and Estle moved back to Fayette County, Alabama.
When she lived in Chicago, our family would have dinner at her place every Sunday. It was an ongoing tradition.
After she moved back to Alabama, we would go visit in the summer. I stayed a whole six weeks there by myself when I was about ten years old. I helped her pick and shell peas and learned how to walk a chicken back into the coop! She humored me by letting me use her front porch to put on "shows" with my cousin.
Grandmother was such an affectionate and loving person and taught us all that nothing was better than a nice big hug around the neck!
When Granddaddy (Estle) died in 1991, family and friends thought Grandmother would soon follow, having such a broken heart. She, of course, did no such thing, and I was still shocked when we lost her in 2003. We all just expected her to live forever.
When I was young, I was shocked when Grandmother would say things like, "if I live until Spring" when talking to friends about future plans. But she knew that each day is a blessing and nothing is guaranteed. She had the good sense to plan for the future, but not put off living life.
Emma was preceded in death by two infant children, and grandson, John Keene, who are also buried in Bethabara Cemetery.
