Veda Viola Taylor

Veda Viola Taylor of Miami died Friday, April 20, 2007, at Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami. She was 94.

Taylor was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Bluejacket to James Thomas and Anna Myrtle (Marlin) Taylor.

After graduating high school in 1935, she attended Northeastern State Teachers College in Tahlequah where she received a bachelors of arts degree in 1943. She completed post-graduate work at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan. She was employed as a teacher in area schools from 1939 to 1977, having last taught in the Wyandotte School District where she taught for 30 years.

Taylor was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association, the Ottawa County, Craig County and Joplin, Missouri, genealogy societies and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Miami since 1931 where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Taylor was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters, Edith Gertrude Tunell, Elfie Gladys Herrman, Gaura Vaughndia Taylor, Golda Eunice Grigsby, Willie Branson Taylor, Herbert Lawrence Taylor, Calvin Burton Taylor, Kenneth Logan Taylor and Paul Vernon Taylor.

Survivors include one sister, Florence Elnora Leighty of Vinita, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Miami with the Rev. Kathy Leithner officiating. Interment will follow at Bluejacket Cemetery. Her nieces and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Bob Wilson.

The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church Choir Fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami.
