DRYDEN, JOHN. 1802-1887 WARE

John Dryden became a Primitive Baptist preacher of some note in Ware and Wayne counties before moving to Texas after the Civil War. He was converted and united with High Bluff Church in present Brantley County , and was baptized June 9, 1823. He was dismissed by letter Dec. 13, 1823. He moved his membership to a church in Ware County, name of which is unknown. About 1835 he was ordained to the ministry and continued to preach until his death over fifty years later. He was pastor of High Bluff Church, 1839-40, and again 1845-50; also was pastor of Providence Church, Ware County, 1849-54 and again 1862-3.
Elder Dryden was a very earnest and forceful preacher and exerted a powerful influence for good both in and out of the church. He experience d a vision when about sixty-five years old, and he claimed the Lord showed him an oak tree under which he should preach and establish a church and that he was to travel westward and would find it. Loading what he could on one or two carts or wagons, of his household goods, he and wife and sons Aaron and William (the latter with his family), set out on a strange journey not knowing where or how far they were going. Three years were thus spent, traveling and preaching, and at last he found the oak of his vision on a road in a well-settled community in Northwest Texas, and he pitched his tent there and began preaching. He found a number of families already living there of the Primitive Baptist faith and without a church. He soon had a church organized and pastored it until his death. The son, Aaron, on a trip back to Ware and Clinch Counties in 1881, told about the three years' wanderings and how at last the vision was fulfilled and realized. Elder Dryden was killed by being thrown from his horse when the animal became frightened at some object. The son, William, came back to Ware County with his family and lived there until his death in 1881**. (ERROR IN DATE )
