Officer Bruce L. Highley, DSN 5956, was originally hired as a Civilian Clerk Typist for the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department on 02/07/1966. On 09/04/1970 he received his commission and entered the Saint Louis Police Academy. Upon graduation he was sent to the 9Th District where his duties consisted of being the administrative assistant for the District Commander. On 09/04/1974 Officer Highley was made aware of an investigation by the Internal Affairs Division for an off duty incident. He drove to the New Cathedral in the 4400 block of Lindell Avenue and went into the Rectory and committed suicide with his service revolver. Officer Highley was awarded 1 Chief Letter of Commendation on 12/01/1971 for police work above the call of duty. Officer Highley has a total of 8.57 years of civilian and commissioned time with the department at the time of his death. Officer Highley was the son of Lieutenant Lawrence R. Highley.
