Helvetia Boswell Jones, known by her nickname, Vet, - and her sisters Martha and Connee were brought up in New Orleans. They gained fame in the late 1920's and early 30's for harmonies and arrangements that uniquely "blended" jazz and blues. With Connee and Martha, they formed the 'Boswell Sisters' singing group. In addition to singing, Vet also played the banjo and the violin. In 1936, Martha and Vet both left the group and entered their married lives. Martha died in 1958 and Connee, who had a successful solo career, died in 1976.
Vet was 77 years old and lived in the Peekskill area. She died of a heart attack in Peekskill Community Hospital, where she had been admitted with pneumonia.
Vet was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Jones, in 1958. They had one daughter, Helvetia "Chica" Boswell JONES Minnerly. She was survived by Chica and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
