Robert "Bob" Anderson, 82, of Gladstone, went home to be with his Lord and Heavenly Father on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, after lengthy health problems related to cancer.
He was born May 21, 1925, in Iron Mountain, the son of Gust and Molly Anderson. Bob attended public schools in Iron Mountain and graduated from high school in 1943.
He received a congressional appointment to West Point but chose instead to be inducted into the Army Air Corps as World War II was well under way. He was trained as a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber, flying 35 missions over enemy territory from a base in Italy.
After his return on a furlough he married the former Doris Snyder of Kingsford in May of 1945. They shared over 62 years of a blessed marriage together.
After the military, he attended Dundon's Business College before entering the workplace. He was involved in the trucking industry for over 45 years, working for the Clairmont Transfer Co., U.P. Special Delivery, and Gross Common Carrier. While he was the terminal manager for the Clairmont Transfer Company in Iron Mountain he was involved in many civic affairs. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Kiwanis Club, Community Chest chairman, Salvation Army Board, and president of the local Gideon's chapter. He was also proud member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He was very active in his home church, Immanuel Baptist of Kingsford and when the family relocated to Escanaba, he became involved with the Calvary Baptist Church. He served on many different boards, taught adult Bible classes, directed the choir and shared his wonderful tenor voice in worship, funerals and weddings.
Bob loved sacred music, especially the old hymns of the church. Bob was an avid trout fisherman, bird hunter, and golfer. He and son David trekked many miles together on trout streams all over the U.P. His main loves were his wife Doris, their family, and his Lord Jesus Christ.
Bob and Doris were privileged to have three children: Rev. David (Marie) Anderson of Iron Mountain, Susan (Steve) Krumlauf of Minneapolis and Mary Jo Valentine of Escanaba. They were also blessed with six grandchildren: Seth and Nate Anderson, Courtenay (Christopher) Guttormson, Kimberly Krumlauf, Shannon (Joe) Nieuwkoop, and Laura Valentine. He also adored his one and only great-grandchild, Bennet Nieuwkoop.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, and brothers-in-law, Keith (Norma) Snyder, and Robert Snyder.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and a brother, Herbert Anderson.
