Enlisted in Company H, 33rd Infantry Regiment Iowa on 1 Sep 1862; Transferred into Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 15 Jan 1864; Transferred out of Company H, 33rd Infantry Regiment Iowa on 15 Jan 1864. While living in Missouri, on 1 Sep 1884, Owen K. Shanafelt, an ‘invalid', files for military pension. Buried: Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles County, California.
21 Dec 1865, in Keokuk County, Iowa, Owen K. Shanafelt married Vienna Long, daughter of Joel and Susan (Grimsley) Long. Together they had Lizzie, Julian B., Garry Owen, Andrew, Edna and Roy. Owen and family are in Keokuk County, Iowa in 1870; 1880 through 1920, they can be found in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.
