Mary Lee Melton Bishop, age 92, passed away Sunday at the Primacy Health Care Center in Memphis, Tennessee.


She was born in Chester County, Tennessee, daughter of the late Al and Rebecca Wallace Melton. She attended school in Chester County and was married to William Bryan Bishop on May 3, 1934. Mr. Bishop died in 1985. Mrs. Bishop lived in Bolivar, Tennessee for forty years where she worked as an aide and later as a LPN and in administration for the Western State Mental Health Hospital. She retired in 1984. She was a member of the Parrans Chapel Baptist Church in Bolivar. Mrs. Bishop moved to Memphis in 1997 to be near her daughters.


She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ruth Colbert and Rebecca Helvering, both of Memphis; three grandchildren, Cynthia Renee Davis, Leanne Peace and John Shane Helvering, and one great-grandchild, Andrew Bryan Helvering. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Virginia Burress.


Mrs. Bishop was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Sue Peace; four brothers, Wallace Melton, David Melton, Paul Melton and Freddy Melton.


Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson-Johnson Chapel, with burial to follow in the Chester County Memory Gardens.
