[The Democratic Sun, January 10, 1896] - Little York was the scene of a horrible tragedy last Monday, about noon. Walter Combs(sic), aged 26, had the reputation of being a quiet, sober and industrious young man. His wife was a fine looking woman, aged 24, and before marriage was Elizabeth Bowman, daughter of George P. Bowman. The were married about ten years ago and had two interesting children aged six and eight years. Apparently they lived peacefully and happily, but sometime ago Mrs. Coombs admitted a boarder - a young man named Robert Taylor. To this, Combs(sic) objected and in the course of time Taylor left the Combs(sic) house and sought quarters elsewhere. But quite recently, Mrs. Combs(sic) expressed her intention of again taking him as a boarder and it is thought that this is what brought on the trouble last Monday. The two quarreled and Mrs. Combs(sic) declared she would no longer live with her husband. The latter in his mad frenzy seized a shot gun declaring that she should never live with any other man. Mrs. Combs(sic) ran and her husband pursued, overtaking her about 100 yards from the house. She fell to her knees, threw up her hands pleadingly, begging him not to kill her. He shot her through her body. The muzzle of the gun was so close that her clothing was burned. It was a ghastly wound and she died almost instantly. Combs(sic) then reversed the gun, placed the muzzle against his left breast near the heart and discharged the contents of the barrel. The shot tore open his left breast leaving a frightful rent in the region of the heart and it is said, tearing away a portion of the left lung. A large crowd soon gathered at the scene and arrived just in time to prevent Combs(sic) from completing the bloody work of cutting his own throat with his pocket knife. He was carried to the house and during the temporary absence of his attendants, the insane wretch, went to the cupboard, secured a butcher knife and was just in the act of cutting his throat when a citizen entered the room and prevented it. He begged for something to end his existence and when refused would try to choke himself to death. Combs(sic) lingered between life and death until Tuesday night when he died.
