Bill passed away with his loving wife, Janice; faithful dog, Frosty, and family members by his side. His family moved to Tampa when Bill was two years old. He was predeceased by his parents, Milton and Pearl "Grand Suzi" Blake; brother, Gene Blake; and son, William M. "Bill" Blake Jr. Bill is survived by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. Bill attended the University of Miami before serving in the U.S. Air Force. His military career was cut short when he was called from his tour due to his father's death. He took over the family lumber business, Blake Lumber. In the 1950's, Bill and an associate bought a 5000-acre cattle ranch, which he personally operated. He was a member of the Rodeo Cowboy Association. In 1957, Bill, along with a group of local businessmen, opened Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan. He became president and managing officer, positions he held for more than 30 years until retiring. In 1968, Bill was appointed by Gov. Claude Kirk to the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, where he served in many capacities, receiving many commendations. In 1972, the Florida WiIdlife Federation acquired Bill and his experience; he was a board member, then president. Bill was the original organizer and first president of the Tampa Bay Wildlife Federation. His work in conservation included serving on the Marine Fisheries Commission. He was the only person to serve both the Florida Game Commission and the Marine Fisheries Commission. In 1994, he was inducted into the Conservation Hall of Fame. He was always sympathetic to the sportsman while at the same time heeding the advice of the professional conservationist. He believed that man and nature could live in harmony by wisely using our natural resources. A complete sportsman, Bill was an avid fisherman, an ardent hunter, golfer and tennis player. An organizer of the Cigar City Gun Club, he won many shooting championships. He was also very proud of winning the Georgia State Tennis Championship. He was a past member and president of Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, and was also a member of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla for over 50 years, serving as chairman of the parade committee for many years. Bill was a loving husband and caring and devoted father and grandfather whom was described by his family and friends as a forgiving man who believed in giving second chances; was an excellent mentor; and a man from the "old school," with strength, character, and integrity.
