Obituary for Willard L. Davis, Miami Republican (Paola, KS) 9 Feb 1998

Willard L. Davis, 85, a native of Fontana and former Paola resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at his home in Mound City. Known as Woody, he was born Sept. 19, 1912, at Fontana, the son of William Masters and Maude May Long Davis. He attended Paola schools. He began his working career at Mabes Meat Market and Grocery in Paola. He was married to Cleta Deel. They moved to California in 1941 with their son, Jack L. Davis. Mr. Davis was employed at the Coca Cola Co. at that time. The couple later divorced. He was inducted into the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served three years and was honorable discharged in February 1946. He returned to Paola and was employed by Pence and Bales Grocery, where he met and married Rosalie Crisler. They moved to Emporia, where he continued to work in the grocery business. Later, the family returned to Miami County and he commuted for four years to the Westinghouse Co. in Kansas City. The family moved to Wichita in 1955, where he began his 22-year employment with Cessna Aircraft Co. After retiring in 1977, he worked part-time as a security guard for two years. At the time of his wife's retirement in 1991, the couple moved to Mound City. They observed their 50th wedding anniversary in August with a celebration at their home. Mr. Davis was a 25-year member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Wichita. He was also a member of Midian Shrine Temple, Albert Pike Lodge, American Legion and the Kansas Peace Officers Association, all in Wichita. The survivors include his wife, Rosalie Davis of the home; two daughters, Betty Hines of Kansas City and Rosalie Scott of Wichita; five sons, Jack Davis of Oregon, Roger Davis of North Carolina, Woody Davis of Arkansas, Stephen Davis of Florida and Thomas Davis of Texas; a brother, Melvin Davis of Franklin, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A visitation was at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson and Son Chapel in Paola. Services followed at 2:30 p.m. at the chapel. The Rev. Doyle Carroll, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Paola, was the officiant. The Rev. and Karen Carroll provided the music. Burial was in the Cadmus Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roger Davis Jr., Benjamin Davis, Jeremiah Scott, Andrew Davis, Adam Hines and Dennis Cole. Honorary bearers were Chad Davis, Jonathan Davis, Michael Boomershine, Shannon Tate, Jeremy Catron and Mike McGowan. A memorial has been established in his name to Hospice of Olathe Medical Center and the American Cancer Society.
