Sister Marie de Lourdes (Helen) Barthel, 76, of 475 Gillett St., died Saturday, Aug., 22, at St. Agnes Hospital.
She was born DEc. 10, 1915, in Decatur, Ind., a daughter of Frank and Emma Zelle Barthel.
On Aug. 15, 1951, she made her profession in the Congregation of Saint Agnes in Fond du Lac.
She received a bachelor of arts degree in business education from Alverno College in Milwaukee in 1959 and earned a master of arts degree in business education from Ball State Univerity in Muncie, Ind., in 1971.
Before entering St.Agnes Convent in 1948, Sister de Lourdes was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper at Schmitt Motor Sales from 1934 to 1945 and at General Electric from 1945 to 1946, and at Central Soya Co.,from 1946 to 1948, in Decatur, Ind.
Following her profession into the congregation, she taught elementary grades in Two Rivers and Wauwatosa. She taught business education courses at St. Mary's Springs High School from 1958 to 1963 and from 1973 to 1982.
She also taught in high school in Elmhurst, Ill., Altoona, Pa., Younkers, N.Y.; and Beloit. In 1982, Sister de Lourdes retired to St.Agnes Convent in Fond du Lac where she engaged in community service.
Survivors include two cousins, Margaret Schmitt Rehill of Middleton, N.Y.; and Mary Francis Schmitt of Livermore, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Nazareth Heights at 4p.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Joseph Springs Cemetery.
Visitation is at Nazareth Heights from 4p.m. Sunday to time of prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and from 1p.m. Monday to time of services.
