lliam Oliver Dunbar was born near Jacobia, Hunt, Texas. At the time of his birth his father had died around May. His mother died at or shortly after his birth.

Son of George Washington and Narcissa (Barker) Dunbar.

He and his siblings went to live with family in Upshur County, Texas. In 1868 at the age of 15 he ran away going back to Hunt County and became his own man.

January 17, 1878 he was united in marriage with Aurelia M. Lane in Hunt County. To this union 9 known children were born.
