Birth: 1800
Death: Mar. 7, 1873

Exact birthdate is undocumented. Probabilities are that he did not yet have a birthday in the year he died, since he died in March, so that would result in a birth year of 1800 rather than 1801.

Robert's ancestral family was confusing. His mother, Isabelle Lyon, was a twin sister who married the first cousin of Isabelle's husband, and both first-cousins were named John Patterson. The correct matching of the pairs is Isabelle with "Merchant" John Patterson and twin Nancy with "Esquire" John Patterson.

"Merchant" John was the son of another Merchant John Patterson of Bucks County PA, who was the son of the initial immigrant couple John and Jean Patterson who were of Scottish descent to Northern Ireland and then to Montgomery County PA and then to Bucks County PA. John and Jean's other son, Alexander, father of Esquire John Patterson, came to the Tuscarora Valley, today's Juniata County PA and then his nephews -- sons of the Merchant John who stayed in Bucks -- joined him. Other sons of the original John and Jean also spread out to the then-bigger Cumberland and Franklin counties areas. But the Juniata area group were the Uncle Alexander family and the sons of his brother, Bucks Merchant John. Down the line, their descendants intermarried confusingly -- including twin sisters marrying first-cousin Pattersons of the same name.

The Lyon sisters were daughters of James Lyon, who was son of the original immigrant James Lyon, who also came to the Juniata area.

All of Robert's Juniata area relations are buried in Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery near Academia, PA. While just a few headstones show in findagrave so far, there is a large collection of them at -- including twin Lyons sisters and their husbands John Pattersons.

This Robert enlisted on Aug 6, 1863 in Boalsburg, PA with Company G, according to Patterson genealogy.

His son James Blaine Patterson, daughter Isabelle Patterson Eldridge, son-in-law Myron Eldridge and son-in-law Henry L. Irvine are all buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
