Dr. James Gus Cosse passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the age of 81. Visitation will take place on Friday, October 25, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street in Shreveport, LA, followed by a Trisagion service. Services celebrating the life of Dr. Cosse will be Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1719 Creswell Street, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery on Stoner Avenue. Father Jason Foster will be officiating.
Jim was born May 18, 1932 to Gus and Kalliope Cosse. Dr. Cosse was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church where he served as a past President of the Parish Council and a member of the Order of Ahepa, Chapter #8.
Dr. Cosse was married to the love of his life of 50 years, Fani Passiakos Cosse. He attended Alexander Elementary School and C.E. Byrd High School where he was on the 1949 State Championship football team. In his senior year he was voted Mayor of the City of Shreveport for a day.
Dr. Cosse received his Bachelor of Science degree from Centenary College of Louisiana and graduated from Loyola University Dental School of New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a member of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity. Upon graduation from dental school he went to the Navy as a Lieutenant and served as a dentist on the ship USS Antietam in Pensacola, Florida. He practiced dentistry for over 50 years. Those who knew Dr. Cosse will forever love and miss him and cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Cosse. Dr. Cosse is survived by his wife, Fani Passiakos Cosse, brother Dr. Spiro Cosse and wife Nancy; his sisters-in-law, Christine Cosse, Pauline Apostolou, and Margaret Passiakos; nephews, Nick Apostolou, Dr. Michael Apostolou, Dr. Chris Cosse and wife, Stacy; nieces, Lisa Davenport and husband, Scott, Connie Mitchell and husband, Dr. George Mitchell, Sophia Kastanos and husband, John, Tina Cosse, Marianne Cosse Boston, Catherine Cosse McInnis and husband, Roger; and numerous cousins, great-nieces and nephews.
Honoring Dr. Cosse as pallbearers will be Nick Apostolou, Dr. Chris Cosse, Anthony Mitchell, Sammy Mijalis, John Mijalis, Jimmy Mijalis, Alexander Mijalis and John Kastanos. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Gus Mijalis, Dr. Mike Apostolou, Dr. William Bundrick, Jack Carlisle, Scott Davenport, Dr. Cecil Lloyd, Dr. George Mitchell, Mike Mitton, Roger McInnis, Peter Winkler, M.K. Woolbert, and Dr. Michael Woolbert and all of his golfing buddies that he enjoyed playing golf with and all of the friends he worked out with at the Downtown YMCA.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Hernandez and the caring staff at Willis-Knighton Hospital and Heritage Manor Stratmore.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1719 Creswell Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71101.
