Irby H. Brown, 101, of Chesterfield, died February 22, 2001. From 1921 until 1970, he was employed as chemist with the Virginia Department of Agriculture. He was a life member of the Association of American Feed Control Officials and a charter member of the American Association of Feed Microscopists, for which he served as president, teaching courses throughout the United States for several decades. His many charitable and civic accomplishments in Chesterfield County include charter membership in the Chesterfield Ruritan Club, which presented him an award for Outstanding Club Member. For 25 years, he served on the committee that created and directed the Chesterfield County Historical Museum. He was one of the three founders and a charter member of the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department. He helped build the Manchester Community Center and was a charter member of the Farmer's Club. In 1986, he received from the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors the county's certificate of outstanding service. A similar award was granted on the occasion of his 100th birthday. A lifelong active church member of Providence United Methodist Church, he taught Sunday school class for over 40 years and served in a wide variety of lay offices. The church held several honorary services for him during his later years. His wife, Ethel Bland Brown, died in 1995. Mr. Brown is survived by two sons, Dr. Irby Bland Brown of Richmond, Dr. Robert Adkins Brown of Columbia, Md.; their wives, Ilia and Sue; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 25. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 26, at Providence United Methodist Church. Interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Providence United Methodist Church, 901 S. Providence Rd., Richmond, Va. 23236.
