Charles May served with honor in the Civil War. He enlisted in 1862 with Company C., 11th New York Cavalry. This company was known as "Scott's 900" and at outbreak of hostilities did guard duty in and about Washington, D.C. In those days Mr. May was an orderly.

At the beginning of 1864 "Scott's 900" was transferred to the department of the gulf, with headquarters in New Orleans. While there the company joined the Red River expedition from which time Mr. May saw active service until the close of the war. He was mustered out July 22, 1865.

Obituary noted he was survived by 3 daughters and 2 sons: Mrs. Robert Farley, Miss Clara May of Hammond, Mrs. Mabel Turk of Mt. Pleasant, Washington, George May of Astoria, and Harry May of Bucoda, Washington.
