HELENA - Roberta (Kaul) Pool, 80, died of natural causes Jan. 6 at her home in Helena.
Roberta passed away Jan. 6, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on her grandparents' farm in Anamoos, N.D., on Aug. 5, 1929. Roberta was a strong woman who grew up traveling from North Dakota to Washington and finally to Montana, helping to care for younger siblings and pitching in to help the family during hard times. From a very young age her nickname was "Lady," because she was always a smartly dressed, classy lady.
A graduate of Helena High School, she married Jim Pool in 1949 after a courtship that started when she was the candy girl and he was the door man at the historic Marlow Theater in Helena. After living in several different locations across Montana, Roberta and Jim settled in Helena to raise their three children, Jean, Jennifer and Tim.
Roberta worked as a bookkeeper for Capital Auto Parts, Grimes Motors and Loop Communications. She and Jim started Loop Communications as a small "mom and pop" telephone store that grew into a full-service business providing telephone installation to small as well as large federal businesses across the state. Many will agree that Roberta managed the company with a strong hand and heart.
Roberta was also active in various community organizations. She was a member of Soroptimist International of Helena, serving as president. She was also a member of Daughters of the Nile, Guardian of Job's Daughters, and served as Lady of Algeria Shrine.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Kelly Pool; her mother, JoHannah Bundus Kaul; her father, Robert Kaul; and siblings Fay Kaul (Brown), Walter and Harold Kaul.
She is survived by her three children; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister; a brother; and several nieces and nephews.
