Birth: Aug. 13, 1927
Yellowstone County
Montana, USA
Death: Feb. 20, 2008
Lewis and Clark County

On Feb. 20, 2008, the morning of the full lunar eclipse, surrounded by his family, James Kelly Pool, 80, passed away at his home after a stroke.

Jimmie was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Billings to Louis and Gretchen (Fiske) Pool.

He was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps. On his return from the service, he met Roberta Kaul at the Marlow Theater, where he was the doorman and she was the candy girl. They married in 1949. Believing college was for fun, he attended Bozeman College briefly in 1947, before beginning a 33-year career with Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company. After retiring from the Telephone Company, he and Roberta opened Loop Communications in 1982.

Being a part of the Helena community was important to Jim. He was an active member of Junior Chamber of Commerce, Helena Jaycees, Helena Model City Program Council, Red Cross First Aid chairman, appointed by Gov. Racicot to the Blue Ribbon Telecommunications Task Force, and most recently the American Bridge League, Algeria Shrine, and Helena Scottish Rite Bodies, and he served as past master of Helena Lodge No. 3, A.F. & A.M. The Masons made up a major portion of his life as he participated in Algeria Drum Corps and the Algeria Shrine Chanters, among other activities.

Those who received a card from Jim can attest to his creativity. He spent many hours at his computer creating personal cards for family and friends. You may have read his name in the paper in the duplicate bridge column as he became an avid bridge player.

He is preceded in death by his fraternal twin, Martha Brass; his mother and father; his brother, Louis Pool; and sisters, Katherine Swartz and Polly Seitz.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta; his children, Jean (Craig) Howard, Jennifer Straw and Tim J. Pool; his grandchildren, Lance and Gretchen Howard, Alisa Straw, and Kalene, Hannah and Aaron Pool; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Krest and Eleanor Hill Olson.

Military honors and Masonic graveside services with members and officers of Helena Lodge No. 3 A.F. & A.M. officiating at the Montana State Veteran's Cemetery at Fort Harrison.
