Jose Antonio Menchaca was the son of Juan Mariano and María Luz (Guerra) Menchaca. In 1826 he married Teresa Ramón and they had four children. In February 1836 he joined Juan N. Seguín's company of Tejano calvary at Gonzales, Texas, casting his lot with General Sam Houston and the Texian army fighting the dictator Sana Ana. As one of Seguin's troops he participated in the defeat of Sana Ana at the battle of San Jacinto. Subseqently Menchaca returned to San Antonio where he served as alderman and in July of 1838 became mayor protem of San Antonio. Menchaca was appointed in July of 1842 to command a frontier company of troops that patrolled the area between the San Antonio River and the Rio Grande. In September 1842 General Adrián Woll led a Mexican army into Texas to capture San Antonio. While participating in the defense of San Antonio Menchaca was wounded in the leg. Sam Houston appointed him an Indian escort in February of 1844. Throughout his life Jose Menchaca remained active in his community and in politics. Jose was a member of the Holland chapter of the Masonic Lodge of San Antonio. He supported Horace Greeley's presidential canidacy in 1872, and organized a Tejano group to voice that support. In 1875 he and other Bexar residents of Mexican descent, wrote a letter to the Texas comptroller of public accounts charging the State of Texas with discrimination against Hispanic veterans of the revolution. The town of Manchaca in Travis County, Texas, was named for him.
