Civil War Confederate Major General, US Congressman. During the Mexican War, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Battalion Mississippi Rifles and served 1842 to 1846. After the war, he was member of the State House of Representatives in 1850 and appointed United States Marshal for the Territory of Washington in 1853. In 1855, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. Not a for renomination, he relocted to Florida and started a agriculture plantation. When the Civil War broke out, he was commissioned Colonel of the 1st Florida Infantry. In February 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General, led his brigade at the Battle of Shiloh, then took command of the Army of Tennessee for the Kentucky Campaign. During the fighting at Chickamauga and Chattanooga, he held divisional command and was promoted Major General in February 1864. He was recalled to the Army of Tennessee in July 1964, serving in the battles of Ezra Church and Jonesborough. After fighting in the Carolinas Campiagn, he surrendered his troops in the spring of 1865. He moved to Tennessee after the war, edited a agricultural newspaper and was a tax collector for Shelby County. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
