Birth: Feb. 22, 1816
Death: Feb. 10, 1905

The photo of Henry Rider was developed from an old tintype, originally owned by Laura Gay Mcbee (great-granddaughter of Henry.

Henry Rider lived in Panola county, Texas for about 50 years. He came to Texas from Indiana between about 1854-1857. His first son, Samuel T. Rider, was born in Indiana about 1853-1857. Henry and his wife Jane, along with Samuel, Walter, and daughter 'Deller' (Madeliar) are shown in the 1860 Panola Co. census.

The birthplace of Henry varies according to various documents. Different census show him as born in Ohio, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky. His marriage certificate show him as born in Ger. and wife Jane born in Ind. Coy A. Rider and sister Helen Rider of Beckville, Texas (grandchildren of Henry) have related that Henry was born as REIDER in Germany, left a military school about age 14 when parents died (circa 1830) and then traveled to England enroute to Indiana to live with an Uncle there.

Family history considers Henry as 'Captain' Rider, who supposedly built a houseboat and traveled with above family down the Mississippi river close to Shreveport, traded for wagon and oxen and took his family near Woods Post Office in Panola County.

In his later years - July 1899, Henry made an application for a Confederate Pension for his service in the Civil War. He lists his age as 84 years and states that he served in 'Renfro's Company' for four months. He was a Wheelwright. On the application, he states that he owns 65 acres, part cultivation and part wooded but the rents and timber cuttings are insufficient to support him. He states that he is in feeble health and is afflicted with palsey. Also that he fell on the sleet, broke his right thigh and has been on crutches for four years.

Henry signed his name with an X - which was witnessed by his son W.W. Rider and by J.N. Fite and W.N. Grisham. The application was denied. The reason given was that he owned property.

As of July 1981, Henry's family bible was owned by Beth Rider White of Joaquin, Texas (2nd Great-granddaughter of Henry). The entry for his birthdate is April 22, 1816 and the date of death - February 10, 1905.
