JOHN DERR GAY
John Derr Gay was born August 3, 1925 and died July 30 1940 in an automobile accident which also took the life of J. W. Hodge, his youthful companion.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. Lyle Smith. Interment was in the Waurika cemetery. Pall bearers included boys with whom John Derr had worked at the Empress theatre and were Malcolm Fowler, Buck Langford, Wayne Fuller Maurice Denny, H. B. Brown, and Howard Phillips.
John Derr, who was named for DR. J. I. Derr, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Gay and has spent his life in and near Waurika. He was always a a busy and interesting lad, eager to know about and be a part in a great many of the offers of everyday living. He had been a constant attendant at the Waurika Christian Sunday school and had taken an active part in various Sunday school and Christian Endeavor undertakings. He was popular socially with his own age group and was vitally interested in school affairs.
His sudden passing leaves a great vacancy in the family. He is survived by his parents and his grandmother, Mrs. Bell Gay. There are also the following brothers and sisters of his immediate family: Henry, Grover and Edward Gay, Mrs. Laura McBee, Mrs. Ozuette Welch, Mrs. Nannie Beilue, Mrs. Itaska Wirt, and Mrs. Inez Dugan.
