Richard served as a First Sergeant, Company D, 4th Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania prior to the war and enlisted in the 4th Delaware on August 11, 1862. He was noted as being employed as a Currier.

Richard "Died Of Disease", Pneumonia, while a POW of the Confederate Army during the war.

He is believed to be interred in what is known as the "Trench".
