Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 1 Feb 1884
"Death of Judge Giles Van Hyning"
"Died At his residence in Canfield, O., Jan. 28th, 1884, of spinal disease, Judge Giles Van Hyning, to the 51st year of his age. Judge Giles Van Hyning was born at Norton, Summit County, Ohio, on the 10th day of August 1833. After receiving such educational advantages as the schools in the immediate vicinity afforded, he went to Poland and entered the academy at that place. Here he continued until 1847, when he graduated with high honors. He also during this time attended the law school then in successful operation at that place, and also received a diploma from that institution. Immediately after his graduation from the law school, he was admitted to the Bar of Mahoning County, at Canfield and immediately entered into practice here. He was associated in business with the late Judge Servis, but not as a partner at that time. He continued in active until the fall of 1860, when he was elected Judge of the Probate Court of this county. This office he filled with marked ability for two consecutive terms, having been re-elected in 1863. At the close of his second term he formed a partnership with Hon. F. G. Servis, which continued until 1872. In February, 1873, he formed another partnership with Hon. J. R. Johnston of this place, which continued until his death. Judge Van Hyning was an active, energetic and public spirited citizen; an able, honest and pains-taking lawyer, and to a remarkable degree successful in whatever he undertook. He was particularly active in the establishment of the Normal School of this place, and from its organization was President of the Board of Trustee of that institution. He was also a prominent member of the firm of Van Hyning & Co., Bankers, of Canfield. He was kind and considerate in all the relations of life, and his loss will be keenly felt by an unusually large circle of friends and acquaintances, and particularly his family, where his kindness manifested itself upon all occasion. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Thursday, and were conducted by Rev. Wm. Dickson. Quite a large number of attorneys from abroad were in attendance, together with many friends from all parts of the State, making one of the largest funeral corteges ever held here."

Note: Giles's will, dated 22 March 1880, was probated 18 February 1884. He bequeathed all household goods and personal property and one-half of his real estate to his wife Hannah, who was also named executrix. Out of his estate a gold watch and chain not to cost or exceed $200 was to be purchased and go to his daughter Henrietta. He left his gold watch and chain purchased from Walter G. Smith to his son Harry. At the death of his wife, he bequeathed the other one-half of any real estate and the other one-half of his personal property to his daughter Henrietta and his son Harry to share and share alike (from Wills, Probate Court, Mahoning Co., OH, Case #2661).
