Mrs. Joseph Vogeltanz Died at Bee Friday
Pioneer Settler of Nebraska Passed Away at the Age of 77 Years; Funeral Monday.
Mrs. Joseph Vogeltanz, pioneer Nebraska woman, died at the family home at Bee Friday morning at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 4 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Catholic church at Bee at 10 o'clock Monday morning by the pastor, Rev. A. M. Hanun, assisted by Right Rev. A. Klein of Brainard, a lifelong friend of the family, who preached the Bohemian sermon.

Marie Yisha Vogeltanz was born in Kostelec, Bohemia, September 12, 1851. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Yisha, came to America when she was only two and a half years old. They settled in Kewaunee, Wis., near Sturgeon Bay, where young Marie grew to womanhood and married Mr. Joseph Vogeltanz in 1872. When their oldest child, the present Mrs. Joseph Kunasek, of A township, was five years old, the young couple followed the general movement westward and came to Nebraska, settling at first in Saunders county and then moving to Butler county.

When their sons married, the old couple left their homestead on the county line and came to Bee eighteen years ago, retiring from active farming. They were charter members of the Catholic congregation at Bee. Mrs. Vogeltanz was first in all good work and her passing will be missed by a host of friends in all three counties—Saunders, Butler and Seward—who came in great numbers to pay their last respects to the deceased.

Mrs. Vogeltanz was the mother of twelve children, of whom six are still living; Mrs. Joseph Kunasek, Mrs. Martin Benes of Touhy, Thomas Vogeltanz, Joseph M. Vogeltanz, Mrs. Joseph Hain of Bee, and Edward L. Vogeltanz, attorney, at Ord. These children, her husband, Joseph, who is now 79 years old, thirty-eight grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren, survive the deceased; also two brothers and two sisters: Joseph Yisha of Lincoln, Mathias Yisha of Dwight, Mrs. Frank Trousil of Dwight, Mrs. Frank Trousil of Dwight and Mrs. Thomas Yirovsky of Valparaiso.
