Alvena Anna Sorenson, one of six children of Louis and Mary (Renken) Holthaus, was born on a farm near Douglas, Nebraska, on December 30, 1899. She passed away Thursday, October 24, 1996, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 96 years, 10 months and 24 days.
She was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Douglas and attended school at Douglas until age 13 when the family moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska. There she attended Eckley Rural School.
January 14, 1920, at Hastings, Nebraska, Alvena was married to Frank Sorenson of the Mt. Clare community. To this union three children were born.
Alvena enjoyed flowers, gardening, along with crocheting. She was also involved with Eureka Extension Club along with Senior Center activities and the Friendly Neighborhood Club of Nelson, Nebraska. She made many friends during her employments at the Nelson Good Samaritan Home and Brodstone Memorial Hospital.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Frank; two infant daughters, Helen Joan and Carolyn Jean; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Herbert (Dorothy) Ray of Hebron, Nebraska; one sister, Bertha Stroh of Norfolk, Nebraska; six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 28, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ with Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Music was provided by Alfred and Janell Hanson singing a duet of "In The Garden" and "Softly and Tenderly" and a congregational hymn of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Pallbearers were Larry Keim, Marlin Meyer, David Holthaus, John Ray, Tom Yilk and Alfred Hanson. Honorary pallbearers were James Kral, James Hanson, Ivan Jacobitz, Don Follmer, Bryce Ray, Ralph Bottenfield, Ivan Shaffer and Hans Christensen. Burial was in Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.
