|Death: ||Jan. 10, 1998|
Stuart Charles Brokenshire was born October 15, 1910 at St. Hielers on the Island of Jersey, England, two miles off the northern coast of France. He came to Portland, Oregon from Calgary, Canada in 1914, Thanksgiving Day. He went to Sunnyside School and graduated from Benson High School in January 1927. He was married to Jewel in 1939. They birthed two sons and a daughter: Charles, Diane, and Norman. They have nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He wrestled for Multnomah Athletic Club and received two ocups: 135 pounds P.N.A., 135 and 145 pounds A.A.U., 1950. He played softball catcher for City View Odd Fellows and opened Westmoreland, Buchman, Montavilla, and Farragut baseball fields. He was a member of steamfitters, plumbers, shipfitters #290 for 54 years, and got this job from a tip while playing baseball. His mother said he'd never get anything playing ball. He belonged to Northwest Outboard Trailer Sailors from 1958 to 1975 and in 1969 received the "Boating Family of the Year" trophy.
Stuart loved to fish; he loved the outdoors. He was a good boating man, and he also was a very family-oriented man. He always treated people with respect.
One day his little brother wanted to walk with him and his girlfriend, Jewel, up to Laurelhurst Park, but his mother said, "You don't want to be a gooseberry!" Stuart and Jewel always let him come along, anyway.
Stuart also belonged to Hayden Island Yacht Club and when he retired, built his family home at Port Ludlow, finishing his membership with the Northwest Outboard Trailer Sailors and belonged to Port Ludlow Yacht Club from 1976 to 1992.
Stuart is survived by his wife, two brothers: Erwin, 89, and Rodney, 75, both of Portland, Oregon; two sons and one daughter: Charles of Portland, Oregon; Norman of Camp Sherman, Washington, and Diane Welch of Redmond, Washington.
