Clarence was born to George and Lillie Tatum White, the only son among three daughters. His family nickname was simply, "Brother." Life was hardscrabble and dusty where the family worked as dryland farmers near Shamrock, Texas.
By the time Clarence was 7, they had moved to the newly formed, geographically huge Stephens County, Oklahoma, carved from former Indian lands. Oil had become the predominant industry, and Clarence's father hoped to make a better living as an oilfield worker. His sudden death left the family without any support.
