John Kite was the son of George Sizemore KITE 1802 – 1864 and Elizabeth Smith 1803. His known siblings were: Hickman A Price Kite 1826 – 1896. Tilman A "Bob" Kite 1829 – 1907; Burton Kite 1831 – 1865; Dock Kite 1834 – 2006; Hylie Kite 1836 – 1916
On Nov. 4, 1853, John Kite married Polly Ann Smith. Together they had 6 children. They were: Barbara Ann Kite 1854 – 1934; George W KITE 1856; Hiley J. Kite 1860 – 1942; Eliza A. Kite 1865 – William H. Kite 1869 – 1942 and Jacob N. Kite 1874.
On Jan. 18, 1862 John enlisted to serve on the side of a the Confederates in the Civil War at Dodson Creek, Hawkins Co,. Tennessee. He was a private Co D 39th Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry (W.M. Bradford's) (39th Infantry) (31st Infantry)
John Kite Sr, became a Prisoner of War, and at Vicksburg, Warren County Mississippi. On July 10, he took an oath to never take up arms again on the Confederate side of the Civil War.
On May 21, 1865, at Nashville Tennessee, John Kite Sr. from Hawkins Co., Tenn. Complection fair, brown hair, gray eyes and 5 ft. 10 in tall. He swore an Oath of Allegiance to the USA, sworn before W H Bracken, 1st Lt., and Asst. Per Major General Cumb., and he was returned home a sick and afflicted man.
In the 1880 census John revealed that he had an affliction of the spine. He was farming with the help of his 11 year old son, William.
On Feb. 10, 1898, John's spirit left this world to join his Lord and maker. A grieving Polly. gathered her children and friends around her as they went to the grave site that had been selected for the burial of his body and bid their beloved John Kite Sr. to Rest in Peace.
