KELSO, Wash. -- A memorial services was held Saturday for Kooskia native Kenneth W. Decker at the First Presbyterian Church here. Inurnment was at Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens in Kelso.
Decker, 83, a retired Boeing Corp. engineer, died of pneumonia Jan. 1 at the Ida Culver Nursing Home in Seattle.
The only child of Bert and Florence Smith Decker, he was born May 13, 1911, at Kooskia. He moved with his parents to Kelso, Washington, where he graduated from high school.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Forces in Australia and New Guinea. He and two others survived a plane crash in the mountains of New Guinea on his birthday in 1945.
After the war, he moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and spent his career as an engineer for Boeing at Seattle.
His wife, Mildred Stevens Decker, preceded him in death.
He was known for his generosity, humor and love for animals. He enjoyed time spent with friends and his extended family. He also enjoyed boating on Puget Sound in the two boats he built himself.
