Samuel Lewis was in Co.A., 6th Tenn. Cav.(Union)during the Civil War. Shortly after the war had ended he was appointed Sherif of McNairy County. He was mortally wounded during the riot at Purdy on July 27, 1867.
Sheriff Lewis was the first law enforcement officer from McNairy County to lose his life in the line of duty.
