Gladys Marie Barker, 94 year old Woodward resident, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007 in the Woodward Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 in the Woodward Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Brian Sorensen officiating. Interment will be in the Vassar Cemetery, Vici. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Gladys Marie (Stewart) Barker was born on August 22, 1912 in Fargo, Okla. to Claude Herbert and Lula Anna (Adams) Stewart. Gladys started school at the Wolf Creek Country School, southwest of Fargo until the sixth grade and she then attended Fargo schools from the 7th grade to the 12th grade. Her mother passed away in 1929, leaving a hardship on the family. Her dad hired a housekeeper to help at home so Gladys could could go to high school. Gladys was united in marriage to W. Lee Barker on February 13, 1932 in the home of Reverend W.L. Fagala near Gage. Through the years four daughters and two sons were born. While Lee was busy making a living for the family, Gladys was just as busy taking care of the children, milking cows, raising a big garden and anything else that needed done.

Gladys had a special duty taking care of Joy Faye and Dorothy Marie, sometimes this was very hard. She will receive her Certificate of Honor for a job well done from her God in Heaven. Gladys had a big heart, wanting to help everyone, everybody was her friend.

She attended the Baptist Church as a child at Fargo and attended the Apostolic Faith Church at Prairie View School House, northeast of Arnett and the Apostolic Faith Church in Arnett. Gladys was saved at one of these meetings and baptized in a farm pond on May 23, 1937.

She attended various churches as her husband, Lee pastored at several. Gladys started going to the Vici Nazarene Church in 1966, she attended there until 1992 when she joined the Nazarene Church in Woodward.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lee on Dec. 11, 1989, her parents, three sisters, Rosa Naomi Groce, Maxine Mary Keller, and Leona May Barnes, two brothers, Charles "Smokie" Wesley and Claude Herbert Stewart Jr.

She is survived by four daughters, Joy Faye and Dorothy Marie Barker; Elma Louise Swartz and husband Lonnie, all of Woodward; Lois Ann Worsham and husband Les of Nacogdoches, Texas; two sons, Willie "Bill" Lee Barker and wife Virginia; Charles Dean Barker and wife Margaret both of Woodward; nine grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Lou Poe of Woodward; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodward Church of the Nazarene with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
