Peter Nickles Jr. is the son of Peter Nickles Sr. and Anna Graden.

Peter was a farmer, merchant, county judge, postmaster, county assessor and a well respected member of his community. He was a christian man who came to America from Switzerland and seemed to live the American dream. He raised a nice family and I am proud to be a part of his legacy. I am his 3X great granddaughter.

Here is a brief biography of Peter Nickles of which some information was found in the Jamestown Missouri Sesquicentennial (150 years) book.

Peter Nickles was taught to make shoes in Switzerland as it is customary for young men to learn a trade. He came to America in 1847 his family had settled in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. There he met his bride Maria Gross, whom he married Dec. 3, 1848.

By 1857 Peter took his young family to Jamestown, Missouri. He was credited for influencing many people from Switzerland to settle in Jamestown. He was elected County Court Judge in 1870 and carried the title Judge the rest of his life. He had a reputation as a fair and honest Judge and businessman. He also served in the capacity of Coroner.

Peter was listed in the Civil War draft registration records of July 1863 as a class 2 because of his former military service of 3 months in the Enrolled Missouri Militia.

Peter owned and operated a hotel that was also the local post office of wich he was postmaster in 1873. Peter and his son-in-law H. W. Shaeffer built the store known as the Brown Store because of a large sign on the front advertising Brown Shoes. In 1879 Peter joined the stock company of the Jamestown Mercantile Store and the Brown Store was absorbed into that enterprise. Peter was elected County Assessor in 1882.

Peter and Maria are the parents of Anna Malinda Nickles-Shaeffer, Carolina Nickles-Roesch, John Nickles, Elizabeth Nickles-Meyer, Emilie Nickles-Berthold-Huck and Benjamin Nickles.

After the death of his beloved Maria, Peter married Julia Gradolph on July 31. 1897.
