Eli Henry Ditzler was born June 2, 1841 in Stark County, Ohio, the son of Jonathan Ditzler and Esther Alspaugh, the brother of Hannah Ditzler Alspaugh and came to Naperville with his family about 1844. He received his early education at the Naper Academy School. He earned his tuition by building fires and ringing the bell. He served in Co. E 8th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War and was present when the first shot was fired to start the Battle of Gettysburg. He was detailed as General Chapmans Orderly the last year of his service. He married Celia Augusta Babcock June 22, 1870. They had ten children, Hugh Witter, Helen Ione, Winona Agnes, Guy Elon, Lyman Babcock, Jonathan Elmo, Jonathan Edward, Evelyn Larena, Jessie Adele and Anabelle Eloise. At the age of 16 he was hired by the firm Skinner, Haight and Co. and then went to work as a clerk for Willard Scott at Willard Scott and Co. He then went into business as a retail merchant in partnership with Joseph Hillegas, Alvin Scott and finally Moses B. Hosler under the name of Ditzler and Hosler. In 1888 he sold his business to Moses Hosler and went into partnership with his brother-in-law Herman Fox in Hinsdale. He served as Naperville Village Treasurer in 1879, Lisle Township Treasurer in 1882 and Lisle Township Clerk in 1886 and also Treasurer of the Naperville School Board. He also served as Secretary of the Naperville Fire Department Hose Company No. 1. He served as Township Treasurer in Hinsdale after moving there. He was raised a Master Mason August 1, 1865 in Euclid Lodge No. 65, A.F. & A.M. He died April 4, 1925 in Hinsdale, Illinois and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
