Entered the Civil War at 19. Enlisted the first time in Co. D, 8th Ill. Cav. on 9/1/1861. His regiment was with the Army of the Potomac under General McClellan and he was engaged in all the battles fought until 1863. He served as an orderly to General Sumner. He was wounded severely in the Battle of Beverly's Ford on June 9, 1863 (Amos received a gun shot wound in the right elbow requiring resection of the elbow joint) and was discharged. He re-enlisted May 2, 1864 serving as Lt with the 141st Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers. He mustered out on October 10, 1864. On November 26, 1866 he married Marilla Bronson of Naperville. Returning to Glen Ellyn he was in the lumber business for many years starting the Newton and Churchill Company with Lewis Newton. He built 25 homes in Glen Ellyn. He served with the Congregational Church only resigning when he moved to Calif. Amos passed away in Ocean Park, Calif on 7/15/1922 and his remains were returned to Forest Hill.
