Hardenia L. Lincoln

Hardenia "Hardy" Lee Carter Lincoln, 87, of Arrington, died Tuesday, February 8,
2011 at Emeritus Senior Living Community in Harrisonburg following several years
affliction by Parkinson's disease. Born at the family home, October 24, 1923,
she was a daughter of the late Thomas J. Carter and Maria Ballard Carter of
Bryant. She was the widow of Ashby A. Lincoln, Jr. of Arrington, who died in
1993 at age 73. They were married 51 years. Mrs. Lincoln graduated from
Fleetwood High School in Massies Mill and was married in 1942 in Washington,
D.C. prior to her husband's deployment to Europe with the U.S. Army. She resided
for more than 65 years in the same house on Phoenix Road in Arrington. For over
25 years she participated with her husband in developing and operating a
recreation area near Arrington that eventually became Lake Nelson Family
Campground. Previously she did clerical work for a number of employers,
including the Lynchburg law offices of Paul Whitehead, Sr. and during World War
II for the federal government in Washington, D.C. For the greater part of her
life, she was active in the Trinity Episcopal Church at Oak Ridge where she
served in various offices including church treasurer for about 50 years.

She is survived by three children: Ashby A. Lincoln, III of Lorton, Hardenia Ann
Moody of Port Republic and F. Kincaid Lincoln of Upatoi, GA; three siblings,
Virginia Stratton of Pittman, NJ, Burnley Harvey of Arrington and Thomas J.
Carter, Jr. of Franklin, NC; six grandchildren: J. David Lincoln of New York
City, Heather Holick of Stafford, VA, Ashby Lincoln, IV of Deluth, GA, Aaron
Lincoln of Alpharetta, GA, Francis K. Lincoln, Jr. of Hurt, VA and Samuel
Lincoln of Kalamazoo, MI, three step-grandsons, Grant Haynes of Salisbury, NC,
Matthew Moody of Winston Salem, NC and Benjamin Moody of Garner, NC, four
great-grandchildren and numerous step great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

One of ten children who survived infancy, Mrs. Lincoln was preceded in death by
six sisters: Sally Whitehead, Maria Caillouet, Jean Debnam, Frances Auton, Anna
Catherine Langran and Roberta Shortt.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Trinity
Episcopal Church at Oak Ridge, with the Rev. Judy Parrish officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home. Friends are
also welcome to visit the family at Mrs. Lincoln's home at 39 Phoenix Road in
Arrington beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday and Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Lincoln's
memory to Trinity Episcopal Church or to the Nelson County Rescue Squad.
