Lieutenant United States Navy. He was an officer in the United States Navy during the War of 1812. He was second in command to Captain James Lawrence on the Chesapeake, and like his captain, was mortally wounded in their ship's engagement with HMS Shannon June 1, 1813. The USS Ludlow named in his honor.
