Francis A. Miller was born January 16, 1908. He was one of the seven children born to Frank an Agnes McCarty Miller.
Francis grew up on a farm in Washington Township. He attended rural school in Washington Township and Lewis Consolidated School. To get to high school, he rode horseback as they had no school hack.
He loved sports, baseball being his favorite. He played baseball during high school and on the Lewis, Griswold, and Atlantic ball teams.
He was a member of B.P.O. Elks, Knights of Columbus and SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Francis was married to Mildred Thomson June 24, 1931. Mildred was the daughter of Edgar and Mollie Short Thomson.
Mildred, or "Sonny" as she was called, grew cup on a farm in #4 Washington Township. She attended Washington # rural school and Atlantic High School.
She was a charter member of the 4-H Pig Club in Washington Township and worked in 4-H until she married.
Francis and Mildred lived on a farm in Washington Township for two years. Then they moved to Brighton Township. At that time farming was done with horses.
In 1936, one of his mares had twin female mules which was considered one of the oddities of the animal world. The husky twins, named June and Judy, were marked exactly alike and Farmer Francis Miller frankly admitted defeat when it came to tell them apart. News reporters came from Des Moines and Omaha to photograph them.
In 1941 Francis and Mildred moved to a farm in Brighton Township. In 1945 they bought the farm and made it their permanent home. The old house was torn down in the fall of 1947 and a new one built.
Francis and Mildred had two daughters: Regina Ann and Frances Jean.
They attended Brighton Township rural school and Atlantic High School. They were both active in 4-H work until they graduated.
Regina graduated from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and Frances Jean graduated from Saint Joseph School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska.
Regina married Larry Mattox. They are teaching in Hemet, California. Larry teaches music and Regina teaches Jr. High math. They have four children: Shelly, Steven, Charles and Cynthia.
Frances Jean married Cordell Schilmoeller. They live in Fargo, North Dakota. Frances Jean is a nurse at Saint Luke's Hospital and Cordell, veterinarian, works for the government as a district supervisor on the Meat Inspection Board.
They have six children: Laura, Lynn, Leanne, Lisa, Lance and Lane.
